Making threat research visible and relevant

Trend Micro asked us to create an overview video introducing Trend Research, the division responsible for identifying, analyzing, and staying ahead of emerging cyber threats. The goal was to demonstrate the depth and breadth of Trend’s threat research, more tightly integrate Zero Day Initiative into the narrative, and explain why research matters in a world shaped by AI, GenAI, and an accelerating threat landscape.

The target audience included CISOs, CIOs, security leaders, architects, and IT managers.

The Challenge: Explain complexity without overwhelming

Threat research is foundational, but largely invisible. It spans underground intelligence, data science, AI-driven analysis, and years of accumulated expertise. The challenge was to communicate that scale and importance clearly, without turning the video into a technical deep dive.

Creative Approach: A 3D city as the threat landscape

The selected concept framed the global threat landscape as a complex 3D metropolis, a living, evolving city where each building represents a technology, threat type, or research domain. This “Gotham-like” environment became the connective tissue of the story, visually tying together multiple chapters and ideas.

As the camera moved through the city, we would “enter” specific zones or buildings, transitioning into a secondary animation style built from:

  • fast-cut stock footage
  • abstract digital paths, maps, and footprints
  • visual references to law enforcement, research teams, data scientists, and AI systems

This hybrid approach allowed us to move fluidly between macro-level threat awareness and micro-level research activity, keeping the pacing dynamic and visually engaging.

Production Process: Exploration first, precision later

The project ran over roughly two months, from early June through August. As with many of Trend Micro’s strategic videos, the process was highly collaborative and exploratory at the start.

We began by presenting multiple visual directions, quickly aligning on the 3D city metaphor. From there, the workflow followed a structured progression:

  • key visuals to define the world and tone
  • script development and refinement
  • detailed storyboarding
  • animatic and voiceover selection
  • final animation and rendering, with iterative feedback

This phased approach ensured alignment at every step, while still leaving room for creative evolution.

Outcome: A clear, future-facing research narrative

The final video positioned Trend Research as an active force operating ahead of the threat curve.

It delivered a clear message:
In a world of accelerating threats, deep research isn’t optional — it’s the foundation of resilience.
